Talk by Stine Lomborg: Public healthcare – private tech : on the promise and perils of optimization

Private tech companies enter public healthcare by providing digital infrastructure and systems at the day-to-day backbone of healthcare practice. Such “sphere transgressions” (Sharon & Gellert, 2023) of big tech into the health domain lead to the possible erosion of public values in healthcare.

In this talk, I interweave infrastructural and usercentric perspectives on datafication for health to ask what are the stakes for individual patients and public healthcare organisations when commercial providers of digital infrastructure become deeply invested in human health. I illustrate my discussion with empirical material derived from a 5-year research project, Datafied Living, which documents the embedding of tracking and datafication in people’s everyday lives, and in key institutional contexts of the welfare state.
